Youth Classes

Parent and child (age 0-3) participate in a weekly interactive music class. Parents enjoy watching their babies develop rhythmic and melodic awareness, memory and social skills. Teachers work with parents to build a repertoire of lullabies, action songs, and nursery rhymes. Parents are encouraged to use the Curriculum CD at home, and to repeat the songs and rhymes daily.

The outcomes of these activities include increased vocabulary, socially acceptable behavior, and sensitive group participation at an early age. The most important skill for children at an early age is the ability to listen.

Benefits of long-term participation in SECE:
  • Ability to listen
  • Rhythmic and melodic awareness
  • Memory skills
  • Increased vocabulary
  • Sensitive group participation
  • Social skills
  • Preparation for instrument study
How SECE is different from other music classes:
  • The learning environment is calm.
  • Parents are actively involved and participate in music making.
  • Activities are repeated often, which leads to mastery of skills and confidence.
  • The class is structured to build a child’s ability to focus and increase concentration.
  • Frequent encouragement creates a positive environment for learning for parents and children.
  • Team Teaching (two teachers per class) allows for quick transitions between activities.
  • SECE teachers have taken long-term training and are committed to on-going education.

First steps  |  Kindergarten and first grade

The core curriculum is based on the Kodaly and Dalcroze methods and lays a solid foundation for rhythm reading skills. Children sing, move, draw, and play games and rhythm instruments. Through aural, visual, and kinesthetic activities the elements of rhythm are experienced and internalized and then presented as the written symbols of the musical language. Children learn beat, rhythm, note names, and values through 16th notes, duple, and triple meter. Elements of ear training, melody, and melodic movement are internalized and then presented as the written symbols of the musical language. Children learn pentatonic and diatonic scales, solfege, moveable “DO”, the five line staff, and melodic movement in steps and skips.
